In this second solo exhibition in Hong Kong, LOKKI's works showcase his signature expressionistic style, extending with the elements of impressionism and surrealism, sharing a unique logic of light, shadow and color constructed with his personal emotions. He hopes to resonate with the audience through memories that are both different and similar. By confronting various long-buried inner emotions, he seeks to re-establish their meaning and significance, learning to embrace a state of openness that allows everything to happen, and experiencing each encounter with the most thorough self.
Through his paintings, LOKKI constructs significant scenes from his childhood memories, revisiting the spaces and emotions of those moments. He explores how memories shape our personalities and invites the audience to reconcile with various traumas and obsessions in the purest and most personal way. This journey encourages everyone to embrace each profound memory, experience the beauty of fleeting moments, and learn to appreciate the romance of the present.
Artist Statement
The melancholic interplay of light and shadow sweeps across the myriad of stars, as we learn to embrace the inevitable transitions between day and night without regret. When joy and sorrow arrive unexpectedly, we learn to accept the transitory nature of life and then to coexist with it. I believe that the memories stored in my mind are treasured, even if the feelings of regret are vividly palpable. The preciousness of these memories lies in their necessity to unfold within specific contexts, with particular people, and at distinct moments in time. Each word driven by the emotions of that instant, every delicate movement of my fingertips, is beautiful; for me, regardless of whether their essence is traumatic or tender, they are all romantic.
This series I would describe as a collection of memories, a Sunday afternoon where sunlight refracts upon the windowsill, enveloping everything in a touch of elegance. It involves taking items from a five-tiered cabinet and rearranging them, placing them where I believe they ought to reside at this moment.
The various circumstances of life are beyond our control, and I must respect the distances created by each boundary, allowing all things to unfold. Our very composition is influenced by the connections borne from each encounter and experience. Thus, in this reorganization, I possess the absolute freedom to imbue each fragment of my life with the colors it has experienced. I can redefine the meaning and emotional tone of these memories nestled in my mind.
I hope that in this reflective journey, both you and I can lie side by side, observing. Even through my own experiences, you may find the opportunity to reshape all that you have long buried, those cherished matters that we ought to hold dear.
