Description
The artwork is composed from a horizontal perspective, symbolizing the creator’s detached viewpoint as they observe the scene. The composition depicts two figures, abstractly representing the author’s final evening before their parents' divorce during childhood. This moment holds deep significance, as it represents a traumatic memory for the creator—one of the last times they felt a sense of wholeness within their home.
The author recognizes this memory as a source of their anxiety, and as the one who controls this recollection, they express the freedom to focus on and process this pivotal moment. The unnatural floral motifs in the piece reflect the creator's complex emotions regarding the significance of this memory, illustrating a struggle between nostalgia and the pain associated with it.
Artist Statement
I am reassigning meaning to past memories, particularly a significant night that impacted my growth. My parents filled my wardrobe with fashion, and our walls displayed a signed poster by Hayao Miyazaki, along with the original art book for "Castle in the Sky," cherished like heirlooms. The scent of tobacco and leather from their smoking mingled with memories of LV bags. I want to introduce beloved objects into this space, like a textured wooden dining table and plush carpet, alongside unrealistic flowers that evoke elegance, hoping to carry this sense of peace into future experiences.
